Planning a road trip to make the most of the beautiful summer weather? What about designing a trip around one of these Australian must sees? Now is absolutely the time to start ticking off that bucket list. There are so many incredible options, and here are a handful to get you started.
Rottnest Island
Take a trip to Fremantle this summer and while you're there, jump on a 25 minute ferry ride to 'Rotto', as locals like to affectionately call Rottnest Island, for a fun day trip. White sand beaches, translucent turquoise waters, bike rides, a slower pace of life - what's not to love? Of course you have to hang out with a quokka while you’re there, and it's also an amazing place for whale watching as humpback whales make their annual migration (depending on the time of year you go). With 63 swimming spots you can't get a better summer location for beachside action.
Great Ocean Road
If you haven't ticked the Great Ocean Road off your Australian bucket list yet, now is the time. This is an incredible road trip including - of course - the famous twelve apostles. This trip has a little bit of everything - wildlife, surf beaches, rainforest, waterfalls, and so much more. You can swim, go for bushwalks, go mountain biking or peruse galleries, museums and heritage attractions along the way - there's truly something for everyone travelling this great stretch of Australian road.
Pinnacles - Western Australia
Australia has so many interesting landscapes that make you wonder if you’re still in our country or have been transported to some other planet - in the best possible way, of course. The Pinnacles of Nambung National Park are otherworldly natural limestone structures, dating back 25,000-30,000 years and are just a two hour drive from Perth, perfect as part of a road trip. While these incredible natural wonders are stunning by day, they are also spectacular after dark under a starry sky - some of the columns are over three metres high!
Coober Pedy
Coober Pedy is a fascinating part of our country. Not just because it's the opal capital of Australia but because it's an underground town with a labyrinth of houses, hotels - and even some shops - winding under the earth's sun baked surface. This town in South Australia changes colour under the magical outback sunsets and it's a once in a lifetime experience exploring this unique way of life driven by nature's harsh elements. Staying a night underground in this quirky town should definitely be on every Australian's bucket list.
