Planning a trip to New Zealand and wondering if you can use your Australian Digital Driver's Licence (DDL) to rent a car? You're not alone. As more Australian states embrace digital licences, travellers are facing new challenges when it comes to car rentals in NZ. Let's dive into what you need to know about DDLs and car rentals in New Zealand

What is a Digital Driver's Licence (DDL)?

A Digital Driver's Licence (DDL) is an electronic copy of a physical driver's licence that you can access via an app on your phone. This means you don’t have to carry a physical copy of your driver's licence with you. The use of a DDL is optional and physical copies are still issued.

Which Australian states support DDLs?

Australia leads the pack in using digital ID tech. But not all states have DDLs yet. Right now, these Australian states offer a DDL:

While these states offer DDLs, keep in mind that their acceptance can differ. This is true when you travel abroad as well, like to New Zealand.

Companies that let you rent a car with a DDL in New Zealand

In New Zealand, some smaller, local rental agencies now accept digital driver's licences (DDLs), offering convenience for tech-savvy travellers. Ezi Car Rental is one of the early adopters, allowing renters to use their DDLs for verification during the booking process. Apex Rentals have also begun to accept digital licences, provided they meet New Zealand's legal driving requirements.

It’s important to note that regardless of whether the rental company accepts DDLs, you will still need to carry your physical licence when driving in New Zealand, in case you need to present it to police.

As the NZ Transport Agency continues to expand its digital services, more rental agencies are expected to follow suit, but it’s still essential to confirm DDL acceptance with each agency beforehand.

Companies that don't accept a DDL

Although some companies might allow the use of DDLs, most car rental businesses in New Zealand still need you to show a physical driver's licence. Major international rental companies such as Avis, Budget, Enterprise, and Hertz do not accept DDLs.

Here's why:

  • Compliance and Security: New Zealand law requires many companies to check a physical copy of your licence when you rent a car. This helps stop fraud and makes sure they can identify all drivers.

  • System Limitations: Some companies use systems that can't yet verify digital licences.

  • Insurance and Liability Issues: Car rental companies often have strict insurance rules, which might not yet cover DDLs.

Before you come to New Zealand, it's a good idea to look at your car rental company's terms and conditions. If you use a DDL, bring a physical copy as backup to save time and help you rent a car without any problems.

Rules for driving in New Zealand

When it comes to driving in New Zealand, the rules are clear:

  • Physical licence required: New Zealand law requires all drivers to carry a physical driver's licence while operating a vehicle.

  • International visitors: If your licence is not in English, you must carry an International Driving Permit along with your original licence.

  • Validity: Your Australian licence is valid for up to 12 months in New Zealand.

  • Driving on the Left: In New Zealand, you must drive on the left side of the road.

  • Roundabouts and Give Way Rules: Give way to traffic coming from your right at roundabouts, and always follow road signs for additional guidance.

  • Speed Limits: Urban areas typically have speed limits of 50 km/h, while highways are usually 100 km/h. Be mindful of signs indicating changes in speed limits.

Advice for travellers

To ensure a smooth car rental experience in New Zealand:

  • Carry your physical licence: Always bring your physical driver's licence, even if you have a DDL.

  • Contact rental companies in advance: Confirm their policy on DDLs before booking.

  • Check NZ driving regulations: Familiarize yourself with local road rules and requirements.

  • Consider an International Driving Permit: While not required for Australian licences, it can be helpful if your physical licence is damaged or difficult to read.
